Event Description
The Del McCoury Band

Del McCoury is bluegrass music’s living bridge to its origin. He learned it at the source, then spent six decades proving it can grow without breaking. Born in 1939 in York County, Pennsylvania, Del didn’t come up through the expected Appalachian pipeline. He came up the way so many did: late-night radio, raw curiosity and genuine hard work. Like countless young pickers, he fell in love with Earl Scruggs, picked up a banjo, chased the music and the rest…you could call it history.

In 1963, that chase changed his life. Bill Monroe asked Del to join the Blue Grass Boys. Monroe moved him from banjo to guitar, made him the lead singer and gave him the rarest education imaginable: bluegrass learned directly from its creator. Onstage every night. It was an apprenticeship no school could offer, and it shaped everything Del would become.

When Del struck out on his own, he carried that Monroe-style training forward. Through the late 1960s and 70s he led various versions of Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals, building a reputation for honesty, drive, taste and a truly distinct voice. Early lineups featured longtime family collaborator, baby brother Jerry McCoury, on bass and a rotating cast of road-tested musicians who helped establish the foundation.

The modern Del McCoury Band began to take shape in the early 1980s when Del’s sons stepped in. First Ronnie McCoury joined on mandolin in 1981, followed by brother Rob on banjo a few years later.

What started as a family band quickly became one of the most formidable ensembles in acoustic music...
