Meet the Artists | 2026 Invitation Art Prize
Hear from four artists featured in the 2026 Invitation Art Prize — David Attwood, David Brazier, Christophe Canato and Jacky Cheng — as they share the ideas, experiences and creative processes behind their new works.
About the Artists:
Jacky Cheng

Jacky Cheng is a Malaysian-born artist of Chinese heritage working across sculpture, installation, textiles and collaborative practice. Her work explores identity, cultural memory and belonging through material engagement with paper and fibre.
Cheng is the recipient of the WA Creative Fellowship (2025–26), the Fremantle Print Award (2023), the John Stringer Prize (2022) and The Jury Art Prize (2021). She has also been a finalist in the National Works on Paper (2026, 2024 and 2022), the Blake Prize (2022) and the Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award (2021).
David Attwood

David Attwood creates sculptural assemblages that explore the influence of consumer culture on contemporary subjectivity. He has exhibited widely throughout Australia and internationally across artist-run, commercial, institutional and off-site contexts.
Attwood was a finalist in the 2025 Ramsay Art Prize at the Art Gallery of South Australia and won the 2025 Roger Pailhas Prize at Art-o-rama in Marseille.
David Brazier

David Brazier works across sculpture, installation, video and research-led practice. His work investigates labour as a systemic and relational condition, examining how bodies and materials are organised, constrained and made productive, as well as how they resist or exceed those structures.
His work and writing have appeared in Kunstforum International, Unlikely: Journal for Creative Arts and What We Want Is Free: Critical Exchanges in Recent Art.
Christophe Canato

Christophe Canato grew up in France, where photography became his primary medium during the 12 years he spent in Paris. He moved to Perth in 2005 and has since exhibited his work internationally, with more than 60 exhibitions to his credit.
His work has been featured at venues including BBA Gallery in Berlin (2023), Espace Vallès in France (2018), Monash Gallery of Art in Melbourne (2021) and the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra (2018).
