The War on the Sand Plain book series stands as one of the most comprehensive examinations of Western Australia’s defensive preparations during the terrifying months of 1942–43, when the Japanese advance across the Pacific created a genuine fear that Australia would be invaded. Join author Graham McKenzie-Smith as he tells the story of the 50,000 troops deployed between Fremantle and Geraldton in 1942, including those stationed around Wanneroo and Gingin.
About the Author
Graham McKenzie-Smith first became interested in military history while working in New Guinea and during a forestry career with senior roles in both the public and private sector he has taken every opportunity to research the Australian Army in World War Two.
He has published fourteen books and many articles, with a focus on the defence of WA and NT. His ‘Australia’s Forgotten Army’ series has become the go to reference on the defence of WA during the war and his ‘Sappers in the West’ covers 100 years of Army Engineering in WA. His largest publication was a six volume set which gave a profile of all 5,700 units that made up the Army in World War Two.
In the Australia Day Honours List in 2020 Graham was awarded membership of the Order of Australia for his significant work in Military History and Forestry. In 2023 he was made a Fellow of the Military Historical Society of Australia.
