Shostakovich’s dazzling Festive Overture bursts onto the stage with exhilarating orchestral brilliance before Chaerin Kim takes center stage on two instruments: first bringing elegance and virtuosity to Glière’s lush Harp Concerto, then moving to the piano for Addinsell’s sweeping and cinematic Warsaw Concerto, music forever associated with resilience in a world at war. Tchaikovsky’s stirring Marche slave brings the afternoon to a climax in a dramatic work born from conflict that starts as a funeral dirge and ends with hopeful splendor. The harp and piano soloist then steps onto the podium as composer and conductor in a finale of peace and love within her own work, Rendezvous.
